Bedding Your Rifle Stock

Bedding your rifle stock can increase accuracy, decrease recoil, and improve the stock’s stability. It can also protect the stock from exposure to moisture and environmental elements, which could cause it to warp or crack over time.

Regardless of the material, the process involves coating the interior of the stock with an epoxy resin. The cured resin creates a hard, stiff foundation for the barreled action that reduces friction and increases repeatability.

Before applying the epoxy, thoroughly degrease the action to make it a good surface for the compound to adhere to. Dip a cotton ball or swab in a degreaser to wipe the rear screw and recoil lug areas.

Preparing the firearm for bedding is critical to a successful job. The stock, action, and trigger assembly should be disassembled and inspected before bedding to ensure the pieces fit correctly.

If the pieces do not fit together properly, contact the manufacturer to have them replaced. A poor fitting stock will apply uneven pressure on the barrel and thereby create a variety of harmonics that will negatively affect your accuracy.

The barreled action and floor plate should then be installed, followed by the front and rear action screws. This is critical to a guaranteed release rifle bedding job.

Bedding your rifle is not difficult, but it takes a little bit of practice and experience to get it right. It can be a fun project to do, and the results are well worth the effort.
